What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an alternative medicine methodology originating in ancient China that treat patients by manipulating thin needles inserted into acupuncture points in the skin.  According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, stimulating these points can correct imbalances in the flow of Qi through channels known as meridians. According to traditional Chinese philosophy our health is dependent on body’s energy-known as Qi-moving in a balanced way through a series of meridians beneath the skin.

Qi has two equal and opposite qualities, Yin and Yang. When those become unbalanced, or their flow is disturbed by stress, anger, anxiety, poor nutrition infection, trauma, poison, weather conditions, a variety of illnesses results. The aim of acupuncture is to treat the whole person, to stimulate the own body healing response and help restore its natural equilibrium between physical and emotional aspect of the individual, improving the overall well-being.

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system to release neurotransmittersand neurohormones into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemicals change the experience of pain and influence the body's self-regulating systems, by stimulating the body's natural healing abilities and promoting physical and emotional well-being, through these mechanisms:

Electromagnetic signals: by stimulating the acupuncture points, which are conductors of electromagnetic signals there is an enabling on these pathways of a greater rate flow of endorphins and immune system cells to specific, sick or vulnerable sites of the body.

Neurohormones and neurotransmitters release: The acupuncture may increase the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones in the brain. All those can change the brain chemistry, sensation and voluntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes whereby a person's blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature are regulated.

Opioid systems are activated: during acupuncture treatment, the pain is reduced by release of different types of opioids are released into the central nervous system.

What acupuncture helps with?

Acupuncture treatment is extensively sought by a vast segment of patient population. A significant and growing body of evidence is also indicating the efficacy of such complementary therapy for a wide variety of clinical indications. Predominantly it is used in major areas such as:

Pain Management: migraine headache, neck and low back pain, sciatica, arthritis, TJM syndrome, carpel tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, post-herpetic neuralgia, etc.

Medical Conditions: GERD, irritable bowels syndrome, allergies, asthma, hypertension, CAD, chronic fatigue syndrome, stroke rehabilitation, vomiting in cancer,

Women’s Health: PMS, menstrual irregularities, menopausal syndrome, fertility, post-partum depression, genital herpes, peripartum care, and obstetrical analgesia.

Geriatrics: Sexual dysfunctions, urinary and bowel dysfunctions, recurrent urinary tract infections, memory problems, improve longevity, etc.

Psychiatry: Insomnia, depression, anxiety, panic disorder, drug withdrawal, smoking cessation, etc.

How Will It Be Diagnosed?

Acupuncture’s system of diagnostic takes in consideration the entire person, not just isolated symptoms. The diagnosis discerns a pattern of imbalance in the physical and/or emotional body. Based on this theory, acupuncture diagnosis includes patient observation, questioning and palpation.

You will be asked a detailed list of questions to determine the true nature of your complaint, including inquiries into your diet, sleeping, digestion, bowel movements, urination, pains, sweats and emotions. Your practitioner will also palpate your pulses on your wrists to judge its condition; will look at your tongue color, shape and coating, which can reveal much about your health. This information will then be organized into patterns and a diagnosis and treatment plan will be constructed.

What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?

When the needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache. Needles are inserted and left in place for 30 minutes or more, depending on the effect required. During treatment, patients commonly experience heaviness in the limbs or a pleasant feeling of relaxation. Most patients go into a state of deep relaxation and some even fall asleep due to the endorphins which are released during the treatment.

The benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition. Many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, better appetite and sleep as well as an enhanced sense of overall well being in areas where the muscles are especially tight, electrodes may be attached to the needles. The electrical current provides a steady vibration to the tight muscles which feels like a gentle massage.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Each patient is unique. The number and frequency of treatments will vary from patient to patient. Some symptoms are relieved after the first treatment, while others may take four to ten treatments. While a specific problem is being worked on, you may visit your acupuncturist once or twice a week, and gradually reduces the frequency to once or twice a month. To simply maintain good health, you may limit your treatments to once every season - four times a year.

Electro-Acupuncture: is the use of low levels of electrical current to stimulate acupuncture points. After needles are inserted tiny alligator clips are attached to the needles which are connected to the electro stimulation unit. The unit is turned on, and the current adjusted until the correct setting. Electro-acupuncture is especially effective for certain types of painful conditions like tennis elbow or sciatic pain and is often used in weight loss.
